ACTS OF GOD WHILE ON VACATION begins with a death threat received by Gordon Coburn, philandering General Manager of a lavish Hawaii resort, then jumps to Kip Stallybrass, an anthropologist researching headhunters in the jungles of Borneo, Mislov Rapolovitch, a demonic, scandal-mongering paparazzo in New York, and on to party-loving Lady Gloria Ryder, a gorgeous young English aristocrat in London. Desperate and hilarious adventures draw them to Coburn’s Waikiki Beach hotel, where their arrival coincides with an international conference on shamanism and a catastrophic, force-five hurricane. There are shamans, witch doctors, spirit healers, and evangelists from the Amazon to the Himalayas present, so as imminent death looms for all so does the question of who or what brought them all together? Who made those death threats? Who is responsible for threatening everyone with death? Is there an Omniscient Narrator? Or not? What a cast of characters - absurd, ridiculous, yet each very human: The post-graduate anthropology student discussing the rules of headhunting. The only daughter of the Marquess of Sudbury who, to remain in good standing with her father, takes up literacy as a cause, printing a poster urging citizen who can't read what to do. A photographer of the tabloids caught in a burning tree as his "rescuer" unspools his film, destroying all his negatives. Five hundred Chinese illegal immigrants learning "Oh Lord Won't You Buy Me a Mercedes Benz," as they steam across the Pacific on their way to make their fortune working in Chinese restaurants in the United States. And best of all, the anthropology student, whose life is saved by the leader of the Chinese, eating in a dissimilar Chinese cafeteria searching for Zhou Chin, the man who saved his life.
Yet for all their idiosyncrasies, the tone is optimistic. Indeed, God is laughing. "When we laugh we rise above pain. We rise above indignity. We even rise above incredulity." I've all the time thought if you can't laugh at what goes on, you have to cry, and I'd much rather laugh. A terrific read.
